The DNR commissioner, the division director of MnDOT, and local officials and industry leaders gathered in St. Cloud February 18th to talk about the Legacy Fund. The Legacy Fund is part of the recently-passed constitutional amendment dedicating sales tax revenues for 25 years to the environment and the arts.
The Legacy Fund will receive approximately $90 million a year to purchase easements and property in enviromentally sensitive areas in the state for the preservation of wildlife, native prairie and wetlands.
It is becoming apparent that many of these properties also contain aggregate resources and counties will need to be diligent about mapping and preserving both the environmental and aggregate resources. Prime aggregate resources could be lost, otherwise, in many counties where significant growth is projected over the next 50 years.
ARM is working with the DNR, MnDOT, the Association of Minnesota Counties and the Minnesota Association of Townships to coordinate an approach that recognizes the importance of both of these resources.
