City bans coal tar-based sealants

Late last year, Prior Lake City Council members said they weren’t ready to join a growing list of cities banning coal tar-based driveway sealers. But on April 18, the council approved an ordinance prohibiting the materials, saying the state hasn’t taken the lead on proposing a ban.
The city’s new ban mirrors one already in effect in White Bear Lake. Prior Lake’s ban prohibits the use and sale of sealer products containing undiluted coal tar.
Council members who supported the ban said they want to stay ahead of the curve on any products that could potentially harm the local environment. Councilmember Vanessa Soukup cited the fact that Prior Lake has two lakes deemed “impaired” by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.
