MnDOT weighs rerouting Hwy 53 through active mine

State transportation planners need to find a new home for a portion of Highway 53 between Eveleth and Virginia in northern Minnesota mining country. . . . The project is necessary because a one-mile stretch of the road in Virginia cuts through land owned by a mining company, which now says needs it access to the iron ore deposits in the highway easement.
