Public works officials try to adopt low-salt diet for roads

Salt for icy roads, sidewalks and parking lots is a necessity in Minnesota winters.  It's also a pernicious pollutant that never breaks down once it enters lakes, rivers and people's wells. With just a teaspoon needed to permanently pollute 5 gallons of water, and about 30 percent of Twin Cities wells polluted by salt, cutting down on salt use is becoming a big concern for city, county and state road workers.
