Quarry generates mint-color tint


Amid the dozens of quarries filled with clear water in Quarry Park & Nature Preserve, No. 21 is a mystery.

The small hole surrounded by jagged granite turns bright green every summer, and no one is sure why.

Juan Fedele, an assistant hydrology professor at St. Cloud State University, is trying to find out.

With help from his students, Fedele is studying the quarry and hopes to discover what’s causing the algae growth that annually turns No. 21 into a vat of pea soup.
