Proof of pavement: I-35 needs help, receives $25.3M low bid

11-pound chunk hits windshield; $25.3M is low bid for 40-mile upgrade



When an 11-pound chunk of pavement crashed through a motorist’s windshield on Interstate 35 north of the Twin Cities this week, it drove home a powerful message about the condition of the deteriorating highway.

Except for a couple of minor scratches, the driver, Erika Kimber, was not hurt. But she was shaken by the accident, which vividly illustrated just how much the 1960s-era pavement on which she was driving needs to be fixed.
